Sum’s Mongolian Bar-B-Que

By Susan Cookson Rice

Meat lover? Vegetarian? Lo-Carb? Spicy? However you like it, that’s the way you get it at Sum’s Mongolian Bar-B-Que, an unassuming treasure in Auburn. You can "have it your way" because each bowl is custom made by the only true expert on your taste buds: You!

Upon entering Sum’s, my family has always been promptly greeted and seated. No sooner can we say "We’re hungry" and out comes the first course of soup and fried wontons. If your kids are like mine, they’ll start crunching down the wontons like they haven’t seen food for a month. My husband and I prefer to start with the soup, adding a little red pepper oil to wake it up a bit. We rarely get any of the wontons anyway.

The main course is the creative course. Grab a bowl, and start choosing from Sum’s long line of fresh meats and vegetables. Meat lovers can load up on cold sliced ham, lamb, beef and/or fowl. Vegetarians might choose veggies like broccoli, peas, mushrooms, onions, spinach, cabbage and bell peppers, to name a few. I’ve found my daughter, who is on a high-carb diet of her own design, likes a bowl full of thick noodles the best. Spices, oils and sauces can then be added to your bowl for individualized flavor.

This is when the action starts. You hand your bowl of yum to one of the stir-fry chefs, who will toss the contents onto his over-sized grill. While you watch, he uses what looks like extra large chopsticks to fry up your concoction to perfection. Kids love to watch their food circling around as the stir-fry chef expertly walks it around the sizzling grill.

Dinner at Sum’s is all-you-can-eat, and there is dessert of soft serve ice cream with chocolate sprinkles. Maybe that’s for the kids, but I like it too!

Sum’s Mongolian Bar-B-Que is a great place for taking the family. The food is easily suited to the individual. The atmosphere is casual. Prices are reasonable. Dessert is included. What more can you ask?
